What Brassica napus actually is

Most people have eaten Brassica napus without knowing its name. It is the plant behind canola oil, and — in a different subspecies — behind the rutabaga in a winter stew. In flower it is the crop responsible for those saturated yellow fields that photograph so well across the English countryside and the Canadian prairie in May.

Botanically, it is more interesting than its ubiquity suggests. B. napus is not an ancient wild species. It is an allotetraploid — a hybrid that formed when two different diploid parents crossed and the offspring retained both complete genomes rather than halving them. Its parents are two plants most kitchens already know:

The cross produced a plant carrying both genomes at once: AACC, 2n = 38. Whole-genome resequencing work places the hybridization event somewhere in the window of roughly 6,800 to 12,500 years ago — recent enough, in evolutionary terms, that B. napus is effectively a post-Neolithic species that arose alongside agriculture rather than long before it.

Why a seed — and why not the oil

This is the single most common point of confusion, so it is worth being blunt about it: PhytoFactor is not canola oil, and canola oil is not PhytoFactor. They originate in the same seed and are otherwise unrelated.

A rapeseed is, functionally, a survival package. It carries everything a seedling needs to establish itself before it can photosynthesize — stored lipids for energy, storage proteins, and a set of defensive and signaling compounds that protect the embryo during the vulnerable window between germination and establishment. Crush the seed and press it, and you extract the lipid fraction: that is canola oil, and it is what the global commodity market wants from this plant.

What the evidence establishes — and what it doesn't

This is the section most ingredient-origin articles skip, and it is the one that should decide your purchase. The honest picture has three tiers.

Tier 1 · Independent, peer-reviewed — but not about the plant

The strongest paper in this category is Yu et al., 2024, published in Current Issues in Molecular Biology, which found measurable changes in immune surveillance and cytokine markers within two hours of a single serving. It is peer-reviewed and academically conducted, and it is the source of the "activates in 2 hours" claim. But read the title carefully: it studied colostrum- and egg-based low-molecular-weight peptides. That is the animal side of the formula. Yu 2024 is not a PhytoFactor study.

Tier 2 · Company-authored documents about the finished formula

Gardner et al., 2026 (a 4Life technical white paper) documents immune stem cell mobilization, and Jensen et al., 2026 (Clinical Report 058-010) documents neutrophil activation. Both concern the Max formula as sold — which does contain PhytoFactor — but both are company-affiliated rather than independently peer-reviewed. They sit a tier below Yu 2024 and should be weighted accordingly.

Tier 3 · The gap

There is, at the time of writing, no published peer-reviewed human trial isolating PhytoFactor as a single ingredient. The "more direct effect on invading organisms" claim comes from preclinical company work. Preclinical means laboratory or animal models, not people. That is a real and material limitation, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling.

None of this makes the ingredient uninteresting.
