First, what a transfer factor actually is
Transfer factors are small bioactive peptides — short chains of amino acids, low in molecular weight — that immune cells use to pass information to one another. They are not vitamins, not antibodies, and not drugs. The closest honest metaphor is that they are briefing notes circulated between immune cells.
The phenomenon was first documented in 1949 by H. Sherwood Lawrence, an immunologist at NYU School of Medicine, who demonstrated that immune recognition could be transferred from one person to another using a low-molecular-weight extract of white blood cells.
